Gail Mcdermott Profile Photo

Gail (Johnson) McDermott (4/11/55 – 6/23/24). She was born in Stamford to Winifred (nee Walker) and Edwin Johnson (deceased). She graduated from Stamford High School in 1973 and later earned her L.P.N. degree at J.M. Wright Technical School, while employed at Pitney Bowes and raising her two daughters Jennifer and Sharon. She spent over 30 years at Greenwich Hospital, where her goal was not only to provide exemplary care for her many patients, but to uplift their spirits and support their families as needed. Gail’s career spanned a time when nurses provided the majority of care, without the aid of digital systems and equipment. She forged many friendships during that time and continued them long after retirement. She was deeply honored to be cared for by some of the children of the nurses and doctors she worked with at Greenwich Hospital, where she received treatment during the last few years.

Gail was a selfless individual who spent her life supporting and nurturing everyone in her orbit. She had a close and unique bond with her grandchildren, who brought her much joy during her extended illness. She was also an avid basketball fan, a pleasure she readily indulged in during retirement.

She was predeceased in 2019 by her partner of 40+ years Herman DeVeaux, who filled the role of father and grandfather to her children and grandchildren. He is lovingly remembered as “pop.” He was also “pop” to the family’s special and beloved canine member, Honey, who was Gail’s devoted Pomeranian companion until 2021.

Gail was also predeceased by her brother Donnie Johnson. She leaves behind her children Jennifer McDermott, Jen’s partner Myron “Shummy” Lomax and their children Coran and Camdyn Lomax; and Sharon McDermott and her daughters Jasmine Williams and Jameece Cummings; and her great granddaughter Harmony Rivera. It was Gail’s wish to express her profound love for and gratitude to her brother-in-law Joey Pierne. While he played an outsized role in her life since he was 8 years old, he tirelessly helped to care and provide for her during her extended illness.

The family wishes to thank all personnel at Cassena Care Stamford for the care and compassion provided during her extended stay.
