Giovanni Camillo D'Agostino, 93, of Stamford, CT, passed away peacefully on December 16, 2024, surrounded by his loving family.
Giovanni, also known to many as John, was born on May 31, 1931, in Castelvetere Sul Calore, Province of Avellino, Italy to the late Giuseppe D'Agostino and Maria Bimonte. He was the youngest of five children and he is predeceased by his siblings Antonio, Reverend (Don) Salvatore, Tommasina and Vincenzo all of Castelvetere.
Giovanni was a devoted husband for 65 years and is survived by his loving wife Antonietta who was also from his hometown. Shortly after they were married, they embarked on a new life emigrating to America and settling in Stamford. He worked at Clairol factory as a line mechanic for 30 years retiring at the age of 62.
Upon retirement, he spent countless hours doing home renovation projects. He loved the outdoors spending every summer day tending to his multiple vegetable gardens giving bags of tomatoes to neighbors and friends. He had a curiosity of all things mechanical and would spend hours with his sons fine-tuning auto engines or any other type of machinery. He was always active almost to the very end and ready to take long drives with his sons to see a car show or an Italian festival in NY or CT.
Although Giovanni loved the USA and appreciated all the opportunity it had to offer, he never forgot his Italian roots. Upon retirement, he and Antonietta made numerous trips back home to Italy reconnecting with his childhood friends, siblings, and nieces and nephews all of whom will miss him. Whenever he went to Italy, the townspeople would chuckle saying they knew he was in town because he was like a whirlwind immediately getting to work on house repairs or trimming overgrown trees. He would leave the balcony doors wide open to enjoy the crisp Italian mountain air and from his balcony in the center of town he would observe the processions and festivals of St. Anthony or la Madonna delle Grazie.
Giovanni is survived by his 3 children, Joseph (Kelley), Mario (Geraldina) and Marina (Antonio) as well as his 4 grandchildren Alexander, Chiara, Mary Grace, and Jenna. His children will always remember the joyous laughter at their Sunday dinners and the many long adventurous car trips taken in their father's Fiat 124 station wagon. Giovanni will also be missed by the entire gang at Lincoln Park where he took daily strolls around the neighborhood.
Calling hours will be held at Lacerenza Macari Family Funeral Home, 8 Schuyler Ave, Stamford on Friday, December 20, from 4pm to 8pm. Please join the family for a mass of Christian burial at Sacred Heart Church on Saturday, December 21 at 10am. Entombment to follow at St. Mary's cemetery on North Street, Greenwich.
