J. Robert Bromley (“Bob”), 84, a life-long resident of Stamford, Connecticut, passed away at home on March 3, 2021. Bob was born April 9, 1936 in Stamford, the son of Dr. Stanley W. Bromley and Dr. Helen J. Brown. He graduated from King School and earned his B.A. from Yale in 1958 and his L.L.B. from Yale Law School in 1962. J. Robert had a distinguished legal career that began with the law firm of Durey and Pierson and eventually saw him become a name partner in the Stamford law firm of Mead, Bromley & Bishop. He was active in local politics and served on the Stamford Board of Representatives and Urban Renewal Commission. He described the high point of his career as being named Corporation Counsel of the City of Stamford in 1971. He authored five books: “Abraham Davenport, 1715 to 1789”, “The Bromley Line, Freedom in America as seen through 10 Generations from 1648 to 1982”, “Englishspeak, A Radically Simplified English Primarily for Beginners in the English Language”, “Washington Brown, 1824-1900” and “Finding Gurdjieff Through the Paranormal.” Bob’s other interests included travelling, particularly to Paris and Key West; historic preservation, including forming an organization to care for abandoned cemeteries in Stamford; studying religion and philosophy, with an emphasis on the Gurdjieff work, Christianity and Buddhism; and investing in real estate and stocks. Although he never married and had no children, Bob was an outgoing and caring person who developed close friendships with many people who loved him as a father figure, and he is survived by the Malki and Slocum families of Stamford, Connecticut, the Cottrell family of Roseville, Ohio, and the Schrull family of Vermont and Tokyo, all of whom were profoundly impacted by Bob’s life. A graveside memorial service for the interment of ashes will be held at Long Ridge Union Cemetery on March 10th at 11:00 a.m.
