Richard T. Swatland, 76, of Stamford, CT passed away on April 9, 2022, following a long illness. Dick is survived by his beloved wife Cheryl Brown Swatland and daughters Lindsay and Kate, all of Stamford; and his brother Robert of Seminole, FL. Richard, who was known as Dick, Swats or Uncle Dick, will be deeply missed by his large extended family, including many nieces and nephews, and a community of lifelong friends. Born to the late Stanley and Sophie Virginia Swatland on October 8, 1945, Dick grew up in Stamford, where he graduated from Stamford Catholic with all-state football honors in 1963. Dick proudly accepted a scholarship to the University of Notre Dame where he played under Coach Ara Parseghian and was an All-American offensive lineman and member of the storied 1966 National Championship team. Dick received the Herring Award for the most improved lineman in 1966. Following graduation in 1967 with a degree in business, he was drafted by the New Orleans Saints and went on to play for the Houston Oilers, where he finished his NFL career. In 1975 Dick earned his JD from St. John’s University. His career in real estate began as a real estate developer and then as a broker with Stamford Mortgage. In 2014, Dick was inducted into the Stamford Old-Timers Athletic Association Hall of Fame. Dick also served on the board of directors for St. John’s Development; was treasurer of the Stamford Golf Authority at Sterling Farms; and was a member and past president of the State Street Debating Society. Visitation will be held at The Waters Edge at Giovanni's 2748 Boston Post Rd. Darien, CT on Tuesday, April 12 from 4 – 8PM. A Memorial Service will be celebrated on Wednesday, April 13 at 10:30AM at St. Leo’s Parish. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to the Amyloidosis Foundation: https://secure.qgiv.com/for/?key=amyfound.
