Salvatore Vonella, 97, a resident of Stamford, passed away peacefully on the morning of March 20th, 2021, in Stamford, Connecticut. Salvatore was born on January 19, 1924 in Girifalco (Catanzaro, Italy), the son of the late Francesco Vonella and Vincenzina Saraceno Vonella. He graduated from Girifalco, Italy public schools and later earned a certification as a nurse. He served in the Italian Navy on the “Raimondo Montecuccoli” Condottieri-class light cruiser from 1945 to 1946. Upon returning to his hometown, he worked as a nurse at the Psychiatric Hospital in Girifalco, Italy. After moving to the United States, Salvatore worked as a Quality Inspector for Pitney Bowes over fifteen years. He always enjoyed being with family and his grandchildren, and doing outdoor activities. Salvatore is survived by his son, Francesco Vonella (Rachele), and daughters Vincenzina Mallozzi (Vincenzo), Maria Urfer (Robert), Elisabeth Magnifico (Frank); sisters, Maria Zaccone, Elisabetta Vitaliano (Francesco), and brother Giuseppe Vonella (Anna) in Girifalco, Italy; 12 grandchildren: Ralph Mallozzi (Keri), Salvatore Vonella (Jennifer), Vincent Mallozzi (Brooke), Domenico Vonella (Julia), Maria Uva (Patrick), Rose Vonella Coronese (Marco), Jenny Urfer, Catherine Gendall (Michael), Franco Vonella (Alesandra), and Joseph, Gianluca, and Stephen Magnifico. He is also survived by 15 great grandchildren, and many loving brother and sister in-laws, nieces, and nephews. Salvatore is predeceased by his wife, Maria Rosa Assunta Ferraina Vonella; father, Francesco Vonella; mother, Vincenzina Saraceno; brother, Francesco Vonella; brother-in-law, Pietro Zaccone, all of Girifalco, Italy. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, March 23, 2021 from 10-12 PM at Lacerenza Funeral Home, Mass at 12:30 PM at Sacred Heart Church followed by a burial at St. John’s Catholic Cemetery in Darien.
