Virginia “Ginny” (Racek) Lopez, 95, loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother passed away peacefully on June 1 in Old Greenwich, Connecticut.
Ginny was born in New York City on October 31, 1927 to Anna and Edward Racek. She and her older brother Edward were raised in Brooklyn, New York. Though she later moved, she never lost her love of Brooklyn or the Brooklyn Dodgers. Ginny attended Trinity College in Washington, D.C. She graduated in 1948 as salutatorian of her class, with a degree in mathematics. After graduating from Trinity, Ginny attended graduate school at Columbia University, where she met her future husband, Stephen Lopez. They married in 1950 and moved to Ramsey, New Jersey, where they raised their six children. In 1979, they moved to El Paso, Texas. Steve and Ginny were married for 61 years, until Steve’s passing in 2011. In 2018, Ginny moved to Old Greenwich, Connecticut to be closer to family. Ginny had a strong faith, a keen intellect, a wonderful sense of humor and a great sense of adventure. She possessed an uncommon inner peace that calmed and comforted those around her. Ginny is survived by her six children: Ginny (Phil) Morrissey, Kathy (James) McCord, Anne, Tricia (Dan) Miller, Susan (Rick) Podgorski and Steve (Loree). She will also be remembered by her thirteen grandchildren: Christine, Jimmy, Jamie, Katie, Sarah, Elizabeth, Alec, Michael, Annie, Daniel, Jennifer, Marina, and Emily and four great-grandchildren: Alice, Charlie, Avery and Audrey, as well as her brothers-in-law, James and Richard Lopez, and her nieces and nephews. She will remain in our hearts forever.
